Congratulations to all the athlete’s that competed at the Junior A provincials, Open Provincials and Nanaimo this past weekend! We had approximately 20 athletes at the event this weekend in Port Coquitlam and everyone should be very proud of their performances. It was a physically and mentally taxing weekend with all the excitement and everyone showed excellent sportsmanship, competitiveness and perseverance as well as creating lasting memories with your friends and family! Big thanks to Chris Wan, Tory Park, Tashin Gee, Steve So and Nik Cruz for coaching to prepare for the tournament. Also huge thanks to all the volunteers that help out with Badminton Victoria like Van Nguyen, Alex Wong, Thomas Hu, Simon Siu, Geraldine Pugh, Rob Oldfield and many more! Also big thanks to all the parents who helped out!

Summer Camps

Badminton Victoria will be running 2 weeks of intensive camps in Cordova Bay at the end of August. There are 2 different sessions every day, the morning session is an intermediate group and the afternoon session is a competitive group. These camps should only be for athletes that are keen to improve and eager to take their game to the next level. Athletes that are unable to focus for 3 hours may not find this camp very fun or productive. Below are the details:

We will also have an exchange where we will be sending athletes to Shuttlesport on August 30th to compete in some fun exhibition matches to get ready for the season and to show the progress that everyone made at camp! This will be a day trip going there in the morning and coming back in the afternoon/evening. I will add a sign up for this on the google doc as well on a second tab. There is no cost for this trip, we just need to organize ferry’s and parents volunteering to drive over and back.

British Columbia Winter Games Tryouts

If your child makes the team, a cheque or cash of $175 must be sent to badminton BC following the tryouts. (If funding is needed please contact your local badminton organization). Another $60 will be required to badminton bc by December 31st for the team hoodie and two t-shirts for those members that are on the travel team. By trying out for the team you are also welcome to come to all practices that are held before the BC Winter Games even if you don’t make the travel team.

The team only travels with 5 boys and 5 girls. Players who don’t make the top 5 boys or girls will be on the reserve list to be used for injury replacements.

The tryouts will focus on Doubles and Singles, NO MIXED DOUBLES. We highly consider those who have a strong singles game.

BC Winter games are a provincially organized event hosted every 2 years in BC and in 2016 February 25-28 it will be in Penticton BC.  These games are too provide an opportunity for the development of athletes, coaches and officials in preparation for higher levels of competition in a multi-sport environment which promotes interest and participation in sport and sporting activities, individual achievement, and community development. There are 8 zones mapped out in BC that participate (we’re Zone 6). To play in the Badminton event competitors must be at least 12 years old and not older than 13 years old, as of January 1, 2016 In 2012 Zone 6 came 6th overall in Badminton and in 2014 Zone 6 came 4th. Great results for the “Island Team”.
Zone 6 incorporates a very large area – see below for all the areas that we can select from.
